75,000 Children In N/East Nigeria To Die Of Hunger

It is projected that about 75,000 Nigerian children from the North East may die of malnourishment and hunger within the next few months if something drastic is not done to tend to their special needs.Acting Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Peter Lundberg made this known on Tuesday 15th November.

The 75,000 children are part of about seven million people within the region, who are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, as a result of over six years of Boko Haram insurgency.Of the seven million people, 400,000 are children who urgently need help, with the projected 75,000 in critical conditions that may lead to death in a few months’ time.

According to Mr. Lundberg, about $5.1 million is needed to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance to help these people.

Insecurity in the region has been a major hindrance to the provision of aid to them, with 240,000 children reported to be severely malnourished with their ‘skin over their bones’.
